Which is Better for Your Oral Health: Vaping or Smoking?

If you want to protect your oral heath, should you:

A) Vape

B) Smoke

The answer is “None of the above.”

Although vaping has been found to be safer than smoking for your overall health, that’s not the case when it comes to your oral health.

A recent report in Public Health England found that most of the chemical causing smoking-related disease are absent in vaping.  However, e-cigarettes can nonetheless cause trouble for your oral health.

E-cigarettes contain nicotine, which has been linked to gum recession, bad breath, and grinding of teeth.  What’s worse, is that nicotine also masks symptoms of gum disease.  What you don’t see may be harming you.

The nicotine present in the cigarette is making the addition. Due to the addiction of these chemical the person finds it very difficult to quit this habit. In the internal organs of the smokers the nicotine will get deposited. This harmful chemical in the organs will impart a craving for cigarette in the persons and they find it very difficult to leave cigarette.

Similarly, the risks of smoking to your oral health are numerous, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Smokers have twice the risk for gum disease compared with a nonsmoker. The more you smoke and the longer you smoke, the greater that risk for gum disease.
  • Smoking weakens your body’s immune system, making it harder to fight off a gum infection, as well as for your gums to heal if you do develop gum disease.

Bottom line, don’t vape or smoke.  But if haven’t kicked the habit yet, be sure to discuss your smoking and/or vaping with your dentist. They can offer great advice and support as you work together to protect your oral health.

What is vaping?

Vaping is inhaling water vapor through a vaporizer or electronic cigarette. Vaping gives the benefit of customizing your flavor. Where traditionally you had menthol and non menthol, you now have a never ending number of possible flavor combinations. In many cases, it also contains nicotine to completely replace the analog cigarette.

Switching from Cigarettes

The first choice you make is to quit smoking and give something else a try. Sounds easy enough right? I mean you see everyone vaping these days. How did they do it? How did they really quit the cravings?

The first three days are always the toughest. We know how you feel about that after dinner, after sex, or first thing in the morning with your coffee cigarette. Having a flavor you can tolerate for the first three days will get you over the hump. You will have nicotine in your system so it’s not the drug that you will have issues with, it’s the mental part, the fixation on having that hot burning smoke enter your lungs. If you can make it through the first three days with a flavor you can stand to vape over and over again, then you have done it my friend. You are now on the road to an endless list of flavor possibilities and a new fun hobby in the making.

Once you have the habit mastered you will find that your sense of smell returns, and so will your sense of taste. Food will be much more enjoyable and so will that after dinner vape.
